The Etna summit craters trekking is the most complete experience to climb Europe's highest active volcano from the north side. This unique adventure combines off-road ascent with high-altitude trekking, taking you to the summit area of Mount Etna with a certified volcanological guide.

How the Etna Summit Craters Excursion Works

Our summit craters of Etna excursion takes place in two distinct phases that ensure a complete and safe experience.

Ascent to the Summit Craters of Etna in 4x4 Off-road

The first phase involves the use of 4x4 vehicles that travel along the "702 – Summit Craters" trail, gradually gaining altitude along the North-East Rift, one of the three most fragile volcanological areas of the entire Etna system. The off-road starting point is the ski station of Piano Provenzana (1800m), a hiking area already destroyed by past effusive activity and around which the volcano's recent and ancient stories unfold.

The off-road ascent allows reaching an altitude between 2800 and 3000 meters, admiring a landscape that changes with every turn: extinct craters, lava flows, 'dagale' (islands of vegetation surrounded by lava), and remains of tourist facilities covered by past eruptions. During this approximately 9-kilometer journey, you can observe up close the scars left by volcanic activity and understand the destructive and creative power of Etna and its summit craters.

Trekking on the Summit Craters of Etna

The second phase is the actual trekking. Once you reach the Pizzi Deneri volcanological observatory — a one-of-a-kind high-altitude laboratory built between 1975 and 1978 in an area free from the risk of lava invasion — you continue on foot along the route the volcanological guide deems most suitable based on the weather-volcanological conditions and those of the group. The summit today features 4 summit craters of Etna:

  • Voragine Crater: protagonist of the paroxysms of summer 2024, which raised it to Etna's new highest summit at 3403 meters
  • Bocca Nuova: adjacent to Voragine, part of the central crater system and characterized by intense fumaroles
  • South-East Crater: formed in 1971, protagonist of the more than sixty paroxysms of 2021
  • North-East Crater: the oldest, formed in 1911

The complex system of crater terraces is visited with the respect it deserves and at the pace set by the guide, on an itinerary designed to understand one of the most unique places in the world's volcanological landscape.

Descent from the Summit Craters to Piano delle Concazze

Once the visit to the summit cones is complete, the descent is made on foot following the sandy channels that, along a comfortable and panoramic route, lead to Piano delle Concazze, at about 2800 meters of altitude. It is a wide volcanic plateau formed by the caldera collapse of the Ellittico volcano, whose remains outline the profile of the north crest of the Valle del Bove.

In this almost metaphysical setting, the morning's 4x4 vehicles pick the group up and drive it back to Piano Provenzana along trail 702, closing the loop.

Physical Preparation for the Etna Summit Craters Excursion

The summit craters excursion requires good physical preparation. The part on foot covers about 6 kilometers with 550 meters of elevation gain and a total duration of about 5 hours, on unstable terrain, with significant slopes and the possible presence of volcanic gases. The difficulty is medium.

Required Technical Clothing

To participate in the excursion, adequate equipment is essential:

  • High-top trekking shoes (mandatory)
  • Technical layered clothing for temperature variations
  • Respiratory protection against volcanic gases
  • Waterproof jacket and hat with gloves

Safety equipment (helmet and trekking poles) is included in the price and provided by our guides.

Safety and Volcanic Conditions

Safety is the absolute priority during the exploration of the summit craters. Our certified volcanological guides constantly monitor the volcano's conditions and can modify the itinerary based on seismic activity and gas emissions. To ensure safety and quality, each guide leads small groups of no more than 10 people.

The excursion does not guarantee reaching the maximum altitude due to the instability of the summit area and variable volcanological conditions. This precaution is fundamental to ensure the safety of all participants.

  • Authorized and specialized volcanological guide
