Etna North: the wildest side of the volcano
Compared to the south side (Rifugio Sapienza), Etna North receives fewer visitors and offers a more natural environment: recent lava flows, lava tube caves and ancient forests. The 2002 eruption's lava desert created a lunar landscape you can only cross from this side.
Access runs through Linguaglossa and the Mareneve road, which climbs through the Ragabo Pine Forest — the highest pine forest in Sicily — up to 1,800m. 1h30 from Catania, 1h15 from Taormina: the most scenic route up to the craters.
