Etna 4x4 Tour: from the 2002 Craters to 3000 meters
Our Etna 4x4 tour takes you off-road to explore the most spectacular sites on Mount Etna's north side, the highest active volcano in Europe. Starting from Piano Provenzana at 1,800 meters, you'll cross the lateral craters of the 2002 eruption and reach the panoramic viewpoint at 3,000 meters with a certified volcanological guide.
The 4x4 Tour Route: 2002 Craters, Observatory and Panoramic Summit
From Piano Provenzana, the 4x4 tour travels along a high mountain track crossing the lava expanses and volcanic sand formed during the 2002 eruption. The first stop is the buttonhole of the 2002 craters at 2,100 meters, where you'll step out of the off-road vehicle for a short walk among the lateral eruption formations — direct testimony to the event that destroyed the old Piano Provenzana.
The 4x4 excursion continues up to the Pizzi Deneri Observatory at 2,840 meters, a scientific volcanological station. From here begins the trekking portion of the experience: a 300-meter ascent on foot along a path of volcanic slag, leading to the panoramic point at 3,000 meters altitude, with privileged views of the summit craters.
The View from 3,000 meters of Etna
From 3,000 meters the panorama embraces the Gulf of Taormina, the Bay of Naxos, the Strait of Messina, Calabria and the Nebrodi mountains. From this height you'll admire the summit craters North East (3,327 m) and South East (3,294 m), along with the imposing Valle del Leone and Valle del Bove.
The return crosses Piano delle Concazze and descends by 4x4 back to Piano Provenzana.
