Excursion Description
An Etna eruption has once again lit up the north side of Europe's highest active volcano. This eruption excursion takes you by 4x4 off-road vehicle from Piano Provenzana up to about 3,000 meters altitude, to observe the active lava flow and at the same time experience the magical sunset over Etna North.
The 2026 effusive activity is fed by a fracture that opened at about 3,000 m, in the North-East Crater sector, with the flow developing towards the Valle del Leone. From the panoramic point at 3,000 m, in favorable conditions, it is possible to observe the approaching lava front at a safe distance of about 800 meters, set by the guide based on the conditions of the moment.
For the latest status of the volcanic activity and the INGV bulletins, see the latest Etna eruption page.
The excursion, lasting about 3.5 hours, departs at 18:30: the evening timing makes it possible to reach the summit viewpoint as the sun goes down, when the incandescent lava stands out at dusk, delivering an unrepeatable natural spectacle.
Excursion Itinerary
After the initial briefing at Piano Provenzana, you set off with the 4x4 off-road vehicles along the high mountain track. The first stop is the spectacular 2002 eruptive fracture, a geological phenomenon that helps you understand the power and dynamic nature of Etna's eruptions.
Continuing on, you reach the volcanological observatory near the North-East Crater, close to the sector affected by the new eruption. From here begins the short walk on foot (about 300 meters) on a path of volcanic slag and lava bombs, up to the panoramic point at 3,000 meters.
The Moment of the Lava Flow at Sunset
Once at the summit viewpoint, you can observe the active lava flow of the 2026 eruption at a safe distance, while your gaze spans from the Valle del Leone to the majestic Valle del Bove and the summit craters. The twilight lights transform the volcanic landscape into a surreal scenario, and the incandescent lava becomes the absolute protagonist as darkness advances.
The tour concludes with the suggestive return through Piano delle Concazze and the final descent to Piano Provenzana, accompanied by the magical atmosphere of the Etna twilight.
